What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?

Everyone reacts to massage differently.  Indeed, you may have different reactions on different days depending on what's happening with you.  In general, bodywork may be able to:

Reduced muscle tension, aches, and pains.
Reduced stress levels and enhance relaxation.
Increase circulation.
Improved posture and flexibility.
Relieve Headaches.
Increase body awareness and a sense of well-being.

Depending upon your specific situation, you may experience relief from chronic pain ranging from a few hours to weeks or more. Some people may experience aches up to 48 hours immediately following deep-tissue massage. If any pain increases or lasts longer than a couple of days please call, it's your body screaming for more attention.

During a session you may experience "therapeutic pain" which mimics pain you've experienced.  From a healing perspective, this is considered necessary to rid the body of chronic pain patterns.  You will feel it release as different techniques are applied.  Then a feeling of lightness and relief will follow.

Do I have to take off all my clothes?  No.

For MFR sessions: Men wear gym shorts.  Women wear gym shorts and halter top or 2-piece swimsuit.

For Reiki sessions: wear comfortable clothing.

For massage: you will only remove clothing to your comfort level. There is always proper draping with sheets, blankets, or towels to make you warm and comfortable and to protect your privacy. Only the area of your body that is to be worked upon will be exposed. In the case of a 15 minute "chair massage" no clothing is removed except for outer jackets and heavy sweaters.

What happens during a session?

As a new client, you will be asked to complete a general health questionnaire. Any change in your medical condition needs to be reported to all your health care professionals in order to provide you the highest level of care. You will be interviewed and from the information given a technique and length of session is recommended. Then you will be asked to prepare for that session.

MASSAGE & REIKI: A special Body-Cushion system, which supports you with ergonomic comfort, is used upon the table. Pillows and bolsters may also be used to comfortably support you. If you desire a chair massage, you will sit on a stool/ chair, set the BodyCushion in your lap, and lean into it.

Please give feedback on the pressure and style used throughout your first session to help the therapist know what techniques work best for you. Massage works best when you are as relaxed as possible. If anything in the environment makes you uncomfortable, please say so immediately and that condition will be changed so that you are comfortable. If at any time during the session you feel that you cannot continue, please say so and we will stop and reschedule.

Soft music is played to encourage relaxation. Please let the therapist know if you have a special piece of music you want to play or if you like to talk or not during the session.

A typical full-body massage will cover the head, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, back, legs and feet. Some sessions may include massage to the abdominal area or hips and buttocks. At no time will genitals be touched or exposed. Any client requesting such activity will be asked to leave immediately and/or be reported to the authorities.

A typical half-hour session may focus on the head, neck, and back. A 15-minute chair massage will usually cover head, neck, shoulders, and back using sustained pressure techniques.

MFR: You will begin by either sitting or laying atop the table, as the session progresses your position may shift and support will be given throughout your session as necessary.

Tools

For massage: a selection of scented creams, lotions, oils and an unscented hypoallergenic cream are available. Their use prevents excessive friction to the skin. Essential oils may be added to a diffuser and/or combined with the cream to provide a pleasant aroma during the massage. Please advise the therapist if you have any sensitivity to nuts or botanical ingredients. Special massage tools may be used for sustained pressure techniques.

For MFR & Reiki: no tools, creams, or oils are used.

Does insurance cover massage?

You will need to check with your insurance company for any coverage questions or changes in policy. Sometimes you can bank money in an account to be used for alternative health care.  A receipt will be provided to you for submission.

Motor vehicle and workman's compensation insurances will usually cover massage/bodywork therapy for accidental injuries.  In any case, it's always a good idea to get pre-authorized.

Medical Conditions

Please check with your physician if you have any questions. You may be asked to have a written referral from your physician on file for special conditions, such as pregnancy or cancer. I do work with other health care professionals and will share information with your signed consent.
